Steel etching / engraving, 5 x 8 inches on sheet 6 1/2 x 10 1/4 inches, bound into 1857 half leather volume of Ladies Repository, sold together with 1858 volume. Engraving: light foxing to margins impinging somewhat on image area; good condition. Volumes: covers rubbed, 1 inch and 4 1/2 inch splits to upper joints of 1858 volume, front hinge of 1957 volume cracked, bookbinder's label to front pastedowns, light foxing throughout, occasional pencil inscriptions, binding tight. The view of San Francisco, copyrighted 1856, shows the city from Rincon Point (now Rincon Hill) overlooking the bay. It was engraved "expressly for the Ladies' Repository" after a drawing by Fessenden Nott Otis (1825 – 1900) who taught drawing and perspective before entering medical school and becoming a physician. The Ladies' Repository was "A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Literature and Religion". The two volumes contain articles, poetry and fiction, and engravings. Item #56963
