Gould, J. and E. (drawn and lithographed by).
[London]. Printed by C. Hullmandel. Published between: 1833-- 1835.
Lithograph, handcolored, image size approx 15 x 10 inches on sheet 21 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches. Light toning to edges; soft creases along left edge, well outside image area; small chips to upper corners; 1/2 inch tear to left edge and 3/4 inch tear to upper edge, also outside image area; faint scattered spotting to sheet; overall good to very good condition. Two toucans chatter with one another. Drawn and lithographed by Elizabeth Coxen Gould after a sketch by John Gould, printed by C. Hullmandel. This plate is from "A Monograph of the Ramphastidae or Family of Toucans", published between 1833 and 1835. Interestingly, in this instance the colorist does not appear to have taken his or her direction from the actual appearance of the Guianan toucanet, the coloration being markedly different from other examples. A fascinating description of the making of these prints can be found at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library website. Item #56831
