Lithograph, handcolored with gum arabic highlights, image size approx. 14 x 12 inches on sheet 21 1/2 x 14 1/4 inches, with accompanying text sheet. Light general toning; soft circular impressions to sheet (not very noticeable); chipping to corners and lower right edge, well outside image area; detached 3 inch strip at lower right corner repaired with tape to verso; multiple 1/2 inch tears to lower edge, some repaired and all outside image area; 1/8 inch mark just outside image area at lower left; overall good condition; image bright. Beautiful strong coloration of the image. A bright-eyed Yellow-mantled Lory, commonly known as a chattering lory, perches outside its tree nest. Drawn and lithographed by William Hart, printed by Mintern Bros. This plate is from Volume V of "The birds of New Guinea and the adjacent Papuan islands : including many new species recently discovered in Australia", published between 1875 and 1888. The text is by Richard Bowdler Sharpe, who collaborated with Hart and John Gould on the project. "The figure in the Plate represents an adult bird of the size of life" Item #56830
