Item #56801 The Most Popular Piano is the Sohmer. VICTORIAN PIANO AD / POLITICAL CARTOON.
The Most Popular Piano is the Sohmer.

The Most Popular Piano is the Sohmer.

[New York City]. Sohmer & Co., Copyright 1887.
Color lithographic advertisement with added gilt on sheet 14 x 10 3/4 inches, advertisements on verso. Two creases to lower left corner, multiple short tears and chipping to edges (longest tear 1 inch and just touching image area), general toning, light staining to upper margins, light scattered foxing; most faults outside image area. Would look well framed. A cheeky advertisement from Sohmer & Co. shows the crowned heads and national personifications of Europe in furious concert, each with a different instrument, with a glowering Bismarck conducting. The poem above the image reads: "When the greatest of Leaders his baton upraises, / All Europe breaks forth into Harmony's praises; / And a SOHMER piano, 'mid wild acclamations / Is chosen for use at the 'Concert of Nations.'" Sohmer & Co was founded in 1872 and was sold to Pratt, Read & Co a hundred years later. This ad was published in 'The Christmas Puck' in 1887. Item #56801
