The Nature-Printed British Sea-Weed. GROUP OF FIVE ANTIQUE PRINTS.

Bradbury, Henry (engraver).
[London]. [Bradbury and Evans]. Circa 1859- 1860.
FIVE color prints, 9 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches. Light scattered foxing to edges of one print, residue from original binding to second edge of another print; overall very good condition. These prints were taken from Henry Bradbury's "The nature-printed British sea-weeds: a history, accompanied by figures and dissections of the algae of the British Isles". Bradbury produced the images by pressing each specimen into a soft lead plate, leaving a finely-detailed impression that could be used to make intaglio prints. The result was a series of extraordinarily accurate nature prints, with seaweed fronds beautifully laid out on paper. The species featured are: Rhodymenia palmata (two varieties, plates LXX b and c), Jania rubens (plate XXXIX), Ceramium nodosum (not a currently used name, plate CIV), and Callithamnion roseum (plate CXXV).
