Hadbound book, four monotone lithographic plates, in-text illustrations, 168 pages, 7 x 5 inches (12mo), cloth-covered debossed decorative boards with gilt. Covers: general wear, splits and tears to spine and 1/2 inch paper loss to head of spine, back cover detached, corners bumped. Interior: shaken (cracking to front hinge and at several places within text block), light foxing to plates and occasional foxing throughout text block, ink inscription to half-title dated "Xmas 1847". First English edition of this book. This is the first English edition of this collection of tales from the Danish writer. The full title reads: "The Shoes of Fortune, and Other Tales. By Hans Christian Andersen. With Four Drawings by Otto Speckter, and Other Illustrations".
