TEN hardbound volumes, color folding maps, full-page black and white photographic illustrations, numerous in-text black and white engraved illustrations, index in final volume, approx 830 pages per volume, 10 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches each, red half-leather binding over grain cloth sides, gilt lettering to spine, all edges marbled. Spines and cover extremities rubbed (worn leather leaves red residue), cracking to joints of three volumes, some abrasions to covers, offsetting from leather trim to free endpapers. Interiors in very good clean condition; binding tight. A luxuriously produced compendium of information from the beginning of the nineteenth century. The set was published in 1902, but some articles in each volume have earlier copyrights, which are specified on the verso of the title page. This is an "Autograph Edition" with a printed message to the leaf after the front fly-leaf taken from original handwriting: "This is the latest, and only authorized Edition of this work, for sale in the United States of America. Jan'y 1/1902." The signatures of the two publishers are reproduced. Each volume includes an engraved frontispiece with a tissue guard.
