Selby, Prideaux John (1788-1867).
[Edinburgh]. [Lizars, W.H.]. Circa 1830.
TWO atlas folio engravings on wove paper with modern handcolor, sheets approx 25 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches. Pinholes to corners; multiple edge tears up to 1/2 inch, some repaired with tape to verso; a few small chips to Bean Goose print (Plate XLII); staining to lower margin of Red Breasted Bernicle print (Plate XLVI), outside image area; light toning; slight ripple to paper from watercolor application; overall good condition. Selby's Illustrations of British Ornithology, which featured life-sized images of British birds, was issued in 19 parts between 1819 and 1834. The plates were engraved by William Lizars from drawings by Prideaux John Selby and his brother-in-law Admiral Mitford, whose signatures appear in the Bernicle and Goose prints respectively. The handcoloring appears to be from the 20th century; the birds are colored well enough but skies not so successfully. Watermarked Whatman -- dates hard to read, but apparently 1829 and 1830.
