TWO atlas folio engravings on wove paper with modern handcolor, plate marks 21 1/2 x 16 inches on sheets approx 26 x 20 1/2 inches. Light toning and general edgewear; pinholes to corners; multiple edge tears up to 1/2 inch; repaired 1 inch tear to lower right corner of Male Bustard print (Plate LXIV), outside image area; creasing to lower right and left corners of same, also outside image area; some specks and smudges; slight ripple to paper from watercolor application; overall good condition; would display well. Female Bustard (Plate LXIV) is accompanied by a delicately rendered month-old chick. Selby's Illustrations of British Ornithology, which featured life-sized images of British birds, was issued in 19 parts between 1819 and 1834. The plates were engraved by William Lizars from drawings by Prideaux John Selby and his brother-in-law Admiral Mitford; Selby's signature appears in these two prints. The handcoloring is from the 20th century; the birds are colored well enough but skies not so successfully. Watermarked Whatman 1823 and 1824. Item #56602
