Fawcett, Benjamin (illus).
London. Groombridge & Sons. Circa late 1800s.
FOUR wood engravings with original handcolor, 9 x 12 inches, 3 edges gilt. Light scattered foxing, light toning to Snipe plate including very faint 3 1/2 inch vertical band at center, scarcely noticeable vertical impressions to lower halves of Grouse and Duck prints, crease to upper right corner of Snipe plate (well outside image area); overall good condition; colors bright. Delicately rendered color plates from A History of British Birds by Rev. Francis Orpen, first published between 1850 and 1857 and republished several times through 1903 (Anker, 1938, pg. 166). The plate size is 4to and not 8vo, suggesting that these prints are not from the first edition. Item #56581
