FOUR VOLUMES COMPLETE, illustrated with double and single page color maps and black and white in-text illustrations, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, page counts: xxiv + 1697, 1767, 1760, 1760 + 31, 11 1/4 x 8 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches, gilt cloth covered boards, half leather with gilt lettered spine (hardbound). Covers rubbed particularly at extremities, chipping to tail of Vol. I spine and head of Vol. III spine, 4 1/4 inch splits to upper front joints of Vols. III and IV (Vol. III also cracked at lower front joint), creasing and 1 1/2 inch tear to front free endpaper of Vol. III, pencil scribbling to Vol. II text block fore edge, light foxing to endpapers, occasional foxing throughout, overall clean and tight. HEAVY VOLUMES WILL REQUIRE EXTRA SHIPPING CHARGES. An interesting compendium of information from the late 19th century, "illustrated with maps, plans, and engravings". The final volume contains 31 pages of testimonials and positive press reviews. The date provided on the title page is 1878, but each volume was "entered according to Act of Congress" on successive preceding years, starting with Volume I in 1874 and ending with Volume IV in 1877.
