TWO lithographs with original handcolor and gum arabic highlights, sheet sizes 12 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches and 15 x 11 1/4 inches. Archivally repaired tear to upper right corner of Muscivora print, well outside image area; corners of cuckoo print slightly bumped, also outside image area; a few tiny spots; exquisite and skillfully colored prints in very good condition. The Muscivora Mexicana, or northern royal flycatcher, is plate 39 from Vol. IV of "Biologia Centrali-Americana: or Contributions to the knowledge of the fauna and flora of Mexico and Central America", edited by F. Ducane Godman and Osbert Salvin and published between 1897 and 1904 in London. Both the male and the female are depicted.
The Anomalous Cuckoo-Roller is from "A Monograph of the Coraciidae, or Family of the Rollers" by H. E. Dresser, published in Kent in 1893. The lithographer for both volumes was Johannes Gerardus Keulemans (1842-1912), a Dutch bird illustrator who contributed to many of the nineteenth century's greatest ornithology books.
