Hardbound book, color wood-engravings with tissue guards, vi + 245 + 8 pages, 10 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches, decorative debossed green cloth covered boards with gilt to front cover and spine. Volume has been re-cased, cover extremities rubbed with fraying along lower edge, corners bumped, pink stain to bottom of text block intrudes up to 1/4 inch into first 25 pages (well outside of text or image area), binding cracked at several spots (repaired with tape at page 107), minimal foxing mainly affecting page edges, common name of grass in pencil to some plates; plates are attractive and in very good condition overall. A copiously illustrated volume by renowned Victorian scientist Edward Joseph Lowe (1825-1900), written in an engagingly opinionated style -- the Tufted Hair Grass is "a very handsome Grass, the flowers of which are well adapted for decoration, being very graceful". The date of publication on the title page is 1871, but the section at the back of the volume advertising other works of botany is dated March 1880. Item #56556
