Matthews, Elizabeth (illus). Engraved by William Hooker.
London. Agricultural Society of Herefordshire. 1811.
Stipple and aquatint engraving with added handcolor, plate mark 11 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches on sheet 12 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches. Includes text sheet, attached at top, providing information on the Hagloe Crab. Good condition; tiny pinholes to margins from original binding, soft indent to the upper margin from a paper clip. This finely engraved and exquisitely hand-colored antique engraved print is from the publication "Pomona Herefordiensis; containing coloured engravings of the old Cider and Perry fruits of Herefordshire" which was prepared by Thomas Andrew Knight, a wealthy landowner who was the most distinguished horticulturist of his time, and an excellent fruit breeder. Of particular historical interest is the "warts and all" quality of the fruit. The plates are by William Hooker after Elizabeth Matthews and Frances Knight. (Entire sheet not shown in photograph.).
