Snyder, P.; Thomas Nast (illus).
Centerfold wood engraving, in complete issue of Harper's Weekly magazine from March 30, 1878, 13 1/2 x 20 inches on sheet size 16 1/2 x 23 1/4 inches. Magazine as a whole shows wear to edges, chipping to head of spine and splits (up to 2 1/4 inches) to tail of spine, which has been reinforced with thin red thread. Double page engraving has center binding holes and very short tears and creases to sheet edges, well outside image area; overall very good condition. The centrefold print is a collection of views of the oil regions of Pennsylvania, signed by P. Snyder and taken "from sketches by The. R. Davis and photographs by Frank Robbins". The images of tanks, trains, and heavy machinery in snow almost make the industry look bucolic. Also in this issue are two debt-related politcal cartoons by Thomas Nast. Item #55912
