Rhead, Louis (cover illus.) Seton-Thompson, Grace Gallatin, et al. (illus).
New York. Truth Company. 12- 1901.
Vol. .XX. No. 12. Illustrated monthly news and humor magazine, 14 x 10 1/2 inches, 65 pp. including covers (cover art by Louis Rhead) featuring an engaging article by Grace Gallatin Seton-Thompson titled "Rodents" with illustrations by E. Warde Blaisdell. A full-page black and white engraving of Thomas Jefferson accompanied by a two-page article by John R. Meader surveying Jefferson's career is the magazine's introductory item. A full-page color plate titled "Golf at the Balmoraz Club, Ltd." provides humorous pictorial coverage of a dysfunctional assortment of golf enthusiasts, young and old. Two additional features, "A Horseless Stranger - A tale of the United States Regular Army" by P. Y. Black and "A Christmas Tragedy" by John J. A'Beckett, provide engagingly diverse reading options. "The Play and the Players" features a full-page color plate of Eleanor Robson in "A Gentleman of France" while "Books and their Makers" lobs a trenchant dig at author Rudyard Kipling and his latest work, "Kim," observing "the first chapter is terribly dull and has doubtless repelled hundreds of readers." Contents of magazine in good clean condition overall; however, covers are detached with paper loss to spine, short tears and three inch tear to mid left edge of front cover. An uncommon publication.
