Smith, Courtland (mapmaker).
Southampton, LI. Richard Foster. Copyright 1933.
Color pictographic / pictorial map, sheet 20 x 27 inches. Toning to verso, light undulations to sheet, light wear to edges with one tear just entering the image at upper right edge. Good condition. This is a pre-1961 issue of Courtland Smith's 1933 iconic map of Long Island, New York, with information compiled by Richard Foster. The map was published in many editions, in black (brown) and white and color, over many years with no alterations to the map itself until an edition published and dated 1961. This map predates that later edition and is notably different in its softer coloration, browns, aqua greens and subtle blue tones (compared with the brighter more garish coloration of the 1961 edition. Radio Stations, State Parks, Ferry Lines, and Small Lighthouses marked. Includes pictographs for Belmont Park, Oyster Bay, Fire Island Light, Long Island Rail Road, Camp Upton, etc. The border is made up of vignette illustrations of historic events and local landmarks. A most handsome map. Item #55355
