Waugh, Colton (mapmaker).
Coulton Waugh. 1930.
Color map, 9 x 13 inches on sheet 12 x 16 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Was folded, centerfold line now scarcely visible, areas to lower left and right corners infilled (outside map area); good condition with bright coloration. A handsome map in the old world style of Colton Waugh with impressive cartouche at centre featuring the ship bringing the pilgrims in 1620 and decorative borders in a wood-cut style with portraits of six sailing ships with decorative sea-related designs. The map is filled with pictographs marking towns and many textual notes of historic interest celebrating the sea-faring history of this beautiful area. "Ye horrible sea serpent" at upper left indicates the dangers encountered. The design was issued in different sizes, uncolored and with handcoloring as exemplified in this one. Item #55133
