Padova (Padua), Italy. Presso I Fratelli Gamba Editori. 1822.
First Edition. Volume entitled "Il Vignola. Illustrated by Giambattista Berti, Architect, of Vicentino," 11 x 8 inches, 103 numbered pages plus 33 pages of delicately rendered architectural plates by Berti. The impression made by the copper engraving plates is clearly present on each page, but for reasons unknown the 33 architectural pages have been folded into quadrants, presumably following the printing and prior to binding. Some pages have short breaks in the horizontal fold at the free edge, and the last eight pages have an 8 inch triangulated fold extending from the middle of the free edge to the page bottom, close to the bound edge. Text at beginning of volume printed on laid paper, while the architectural plates are printed on wove paper. The volume has suffered from unfortunate maintenance, with small soiling spots on two plates. Amazingly, the other 31 plates remain, overall, in good condition. An impressive architectural study.
