Volume II of the three-volume set, 11 3/4 x 9 inches; 414 pages plus, at rear, 14 page "Fac-Simile of the Original Treaty with Japan," 11 pages. Index, and 17 folded charts. Two additional folded maps are present, one in the report on Cyclones of the Western Pacific and the other in the report on the Gulf Stream in the Western Pacific. Embossed covers, the front depicting a Japanese harbor view with an American ship present, while the rear features the American Eagle. Spine is damaged, with loss of embossed material at top and bottom and two chips at middle. Binding remains tight, light toning, and occasional offsetting, to some of the plates, but overall in very good clean condition. Overall, more than 20 contributors are reflected in the various commentaries comprising the volume. Also, the numerous lithographic plates, many in color, provide illustrated documentation of scientific aspects of the Expedition. In order of appearance they are: Agriculture (4 plates: Japanese tools and machines); Natural History: 2 plates: (Yak and Fox); Ornithology 6 plates (all color); Ichthyology 10 plates (all color); Conchology 5 plates (2 in color). In addition, "Fac-Simile of the Treaty with Japan" (in Japanese), 17 folded Maps & Charts, including two of Yedo (present day Tokyo, numbers16 and 17). An amazing volume documenting significant aspects of the Perry Expedition which led to re-engagement of Japan with the West. Item #55107
