Accrington & London. E. J. Riley. No date. Ca. 1930.
Folded brochure unfolding to colorful double-sided advertising panel approximately 30 x 17 inches featuring various of the company's billiard tables as well as folding bagatelle boards and a variety of accessory products. Black and white photos provide visuals regarding the company's factories and the laborers' crafting the firm's products. A centrally located color panel depicts three different activities involving the tables: a large one at center is pictured in a club-like environment, a smaller "home table" is shown being converted from a dining table by removing a top layer of wooden panels, and in the third two fashionable young women in home-like surroundings are enjoying a game. A sentiment boldly featured on one panel of the brochure, supporting their product's utility, proclaims: "Keep Your Boys At Home." Brochure in good clean condition with several small breaks at fold. Most definitely an uncommon item. The Riley company dates to 1878, originally as a retail outlet for sporting goods but advancing in the 1890s to the manufacture of billiard tables. Their Accrington factory opened in 1898, with a London Showroom four years later. After more than a century in business, with changes in ownership and restructuring, the firm was forced to close in early 2003.
