Wellington, New Zealand. Thos. Pringle. No date. Ca. 1900.
Undated commercially-issued photo album, "39 Permanent Prints Copyright Thos. Pringle Wellington N.Z." Album measures 10 x 12 inches and features a panoramic photo of Wellington on front cover. Album contains 6 full-page views of the city (7 ¼ x 9 ¼ inches) and 6 similarly-sized pages each featuring between 4 and 6 photos of the city. None of the photos show a "horseless carriage" on the streets, indicating an early 1900s date of publication. WorldCat lists five libraries holding his item (all in New Zealand) and lists 1905 (?) as the date of publication—although an earlier date seems likely. Covers are abraded along the edges; composition material comprising spine is chipped and loose, but binding remains tight and the photo pages are all clean and uncompromised by age. An uncommon item. Pringle is best known for his photographs of the Mori people. His dates of birth and death are given as 1858 and 1931. If the dates are accurate, Pringle's photographs were taken when he was in his mid-40s, with an established background in photography and commercial publication. Item #54891
