Antoncich, Frank (mapmaker).
Virginia, Minnesota. W. A. Fisher Co., Copyright 1940, likely a later issue ca. 1940s- 1950.
Color pictographic / pictorial map, 21 1/4 x 16 3/4 inches on sheet 22 x 18 inches, short repaired tear just entering image at left upper edge and repaired tear entering image (about 1 inch) at lower right, both of which are scarcely noticeable. Printed on a textured paper. Overall very good condition, clean and bright. Although dated 1940, this map is clearly a later imprint than the Brainerd Lake map with our stock ID number 55285. The colors are brighter, and it has never been folded. Cartoon figures and accompanying text appear to mirror the map with folds while, as in the other Brainerd map, the Mississippi River runs in a southwestern direction across a major portion of the map with the town of Brainerd depicted on both sides of the river. As is the case with the folded Brainerd Lake map, beneath the title is noted: “Historical information taken from the files of the Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul.” An edition of this map is featured in the article "The 1930s 'Cartomaps' of Frank Antoncich" in the Washington Map Society Portolan Journal Winter 2018.
