Boston. Maturin Murray Ballou. 11-10- 1855.
Weekly newspaper, 15 x 10 ¼ inches, p 189 to p 304. Several small time-tone spots appear in the text, but the illustrations themselves remain clear and bright. An attractive complete issue in very good condition. Featured on two interior pages is an illustrated article with four wood-engraved views published on the occasion of the French tragedienne Mlle. Rachel’s Boston stage debut. Depicted is the Grand Staircase of the theatre, a large view of the Stage and Auditorium, smaller views of the Vestibule and the Ladies’ Drawing Room. Copious text delineates, with worshipful adoration, Rachel’s performance in a drama by Corneille: "No planet of brighter magnitude than Rachel ever burst upon the stage.... In the presence of Rachel, the critic’s occupation is gone; he has but to admire and applaud." Item #54134
