New York. Dana T. Bennett Co., No date. Ca. 1912.
Pamphlet 8 x 5 ½ inches advertising the touring New York sensation "Bought and Paid For," a scandalous drama involving a woman’s dilemma as she ponders leaving her alcoholic husband. The play, which opened in September 1911 starred Julia Dean and chalked up 431 performances, closing in October 1912. The pamphlet is intended to promote the touring company of the play, and contains photo illustrations and sixteen quote-worthy snippets from New York City theatre critics—a gold mine for publicists of the touring show. A typical citation is that taken from a review in the Evening Journal authored by a critic identified, unfortunately, as "Zit." He or she writes: "makes you laugh with one eye, cry with the other," no small accomplishment. This program is imprinted with the "Heilig Theatre, Portland Week Commencing Sunday, October 13."
