London. RKO Radio Pictures Ltd., 1948.
Staple-bound brochure comprised of eighteen 12 x 9 1/4 inch pages, illustrated throughout in black and white, each page addressed to cinema owners to assist them in promoting the new RKO Technicolor film "A Song Is Born" starring Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo. The film features many of the era's leading jazz musicians, including Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Barnet, Lionel Hampton and Mel Powell. The brochure offers a paragraph synopsis of the film, identifies the cast of characters and provides multiple studio-composed press notices and "catch-lines" ("Danny Kaye at his madcap best"); also biographies of the stars, display cards flogging the film for display in the shop windows of area merchants. Also, film stills for display, press-ready bios of the featured jazz musicians. sheet music of songs from the film as well as pictorial advertising panels and large scale posters featuring Kaye and Mayo, and much much more. Very good clean condition. The self-titled "Campaign Book" offers a seemingly endless variety of ways to plug what appears a less than sparkling product. Oddly, and perhaps mercifully, the film's director Howard Hawks is somehow detached from the hawking strategies advanced in the Campaign Book. The jazz musicians featured in the film appear to be its saving grace. Item #54075
