St. Paul, Minn. The Pioneer Press, 1902.
First Edition. Two folding color illustrations and one folding black and white illustration in the Japanese style, black and white photo plates, 220pp. plus index, 8 ¼ x 6 inches, embossed gilt pictorial cloth-covered boards. Volume is ex-library with usual (unfortunate) markings, including a blacked-out call number on the spine and inked library details on verso of front and rear covers. Contents in very good clean condition. An uncommon publication; only 250 copies were issued of this, the first edition. The volume contains seven photo-illustrated botanical papers which the book's Introduction states "were first given before the members of the Minnesota Seaside [Marine Biological] Station during their season on the coast [of Vancouver Island, Canada] in 1901." The Introduction further observes the papers "are of the nature rather of fireside talks than of formal scientific lectures." The papers cover the properties, collection and use of algae in diverse areas, from British Columbia, to Japan to Jamaica. The Seaside Station's last investigative summer field study, under the leadership of Josephine E. Tilden of the University of Minnesota, took place in 1907, following which funding from the University was withdrawn. There are three folded illustrations of Japanese design reflecting aquatic harvesting, one of which gives colorful focuses to the gathering of massive strands of seaweed. The seven papers by various authors are "Uses of Marine Algae in Japan" (K. Yendo); "Distribution of Plants in Colorado, East of the Divide" (D. Ramaley); "Physiology of the Cotyledon" (H. Lyon); "Botanizing in Jamaica" (E. Butler); "Algae Collecting in the Hawaiian Islands" (J. Tilden); "Distribution of Marine Algae in Japan" (K. Yendo); "The Kelps of Juan de Fuca" (C. MacMillan). The Library of Congress reports there were no publications of the title between 1902 and 1905.
