Harrison Weir, et al. (illus).
London. George C. Leighton. 1871.
Hard cover volume, 16 x 12 inches; 652 pp. Front and rear covers detached; spine totally perished. Tipped-in centerfold illustrations. A number of issues have the term "Printed on Thin Paper for Foreign Postage" printed beside the masthead on the front page. Missing pp. 115-118; a binding error disrupts the sequence of pp 612 to 621 (all pp present). The half-year volume is tightly bound with contents in good condition, save for occasional short tears. Particular attention is extended to coverage of the Chicago fire, with map and assorted before-and-after illustrations of the city. Additional extensive coverage dedicated to the (Sir Walter) Scott Centenary, with numerous views relevant to Scott's life and literature. Additional noteworthy illustrated articles include the opening of the extraordinary Mont Cenis Railroad Tunnel; the Smithfield Cattle Show (two full-page illustrations); a double-page "Hop Pickers"; several pages featuring the Vintage in Medoc; the double-page "Match at Football--the Scrimmage"; double-page views of Cardiff and Scarborough; a full-page illustration of the Midland Railway Hotel, Euston Road (now St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel); Hawking; Christmas in Australia; Sardine Fishery in Brittany; "The Gate of Victory; Cairo," Harrison Weir's "Prize Cats" (1 pp) and "Prize Poultry and Dogs" (2 pp); a double-page featuring Cockney seaside revelers and another double-page featuring well-to-do picnickers, and much more. A most interesting half-year volume with extensive engaging illustrations; very good condition, with cover and spine issues noted. Item #53222
