Engraving with mezzotint, printed in color with additional handcolor, image size 12 x 7 1/2 inches on sheet 14 x 9 inches. Very good condition. Four varieties of what is now Centaurea jacea, plate No. 593 from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann "Phytanthoza Iconographia," printed on thick laid paper. Dunthorne (#327) notes that plates from this work represent "some of the earliest examples of color printing from a single plate," many of them printed by a combination of line engraving and mezzotint.
