Packer, F. (Del. et Lith.)
London. Robert Cocks & Co., 1862.
Gift Book cum Music Album; gilt decorative embossed red cloth-covered boards; 14 x 10 1/2 inches; 81 pp. Title Page and Dedication Page (unused) lithographed in color, together with eight color lithographic title pages to musical compositions, as called for on the "Contents" page. Corners bumped; music sheets generally loose in binding; rear cover exhibits a dozen or so small "pock" marks in the cloth covering. Contents in very good clean condition. Composers include Alphonse Leduc, Franz Abt, W. Vincent Wallace, Stephen Glover, etc. The lithographs are identified on several of the title pages as the work of T[homas] Packer, whose cover illustrations can be seen in the sheet music collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. "The Spectator" wrote of the 1862 Burlington Music Album: "The intrinsic merits of music albums...is generally of inverse proportion to the the splendour of their binding, and the publication before us is no exception to the rule..." More charitably, the Art Journal for 1863 (p.243) found the Burlington Music Album issued that year (the album presently on offer) to be "a graceful and beautiful gift book." Indeed, there is much to admire in the 1863 Burlington Album, extending well beyond the "splendour" of the binding. An exceptionally attractive Victorian gift book; good clean condition, with issues noted. Item #52404
