Munich. Kurt Desch. No date. Ca. 1945- 1949.
Color pictographic / pictorial lithograph map, 22 1/2 x 19 1/2 on sheet size 24 x 20 1/2 inches. 1/2 inch tear to upper edge (just penetrating neat line), light creasing from rolling, overall very good condition. An unusual decorative pictorial map, from the years immediately following World War II, depicting the American Zone of Occupation in southern Germany. It portrays a bucolic land, with pictographs representing the products and industries, the buildings and the coats of arms of various cities including Munchen (Munich), Frankfurt, Hamberg (Hamburg), Darmstadt, Augsburg, Bayreuth etc. The rich quality of the lithographic printing further adds to the lush sense, at odds with the time period. The border has a military style with stars, stripes and epaulet-style design, suggesting that these were produced for members of the U.S. military to be taken stateside as souvenirs. "Ordered by Army Exchange Service published by Kurt Desch, Munich Germany" printed at lower left corner; Reproduced and printed by Joh. Roth sel. Ww., Munich Germany." Item #51275
