Apollo's gift, or the Musical Souvenir for MDCCCXXX.
Harding, James Duffield; Philip Reinagle, et al. (illus).
London. S. Chappell et al. 1830.
Folio volume of vocal and instrumental music 14 x 10 inches; 93 pp plus 10 facsimile music sheets. Four (of five) monochromatic lithographed plates, printed on India paper. Covers detached and battered; spine perished; text block complete but broken into parts. Foxing to endpapers and last pages; foxing to support paper of lithographic plates, not affecting the image. The lithographs by Duffield and Reinagle are in good condition, with age toning noticeable in borders; the plate entitled The Moorish Maid after A. E. Chalon is foxed with an abraded free edge. The cover lithograph by W. Sharp is soiled and darkened with age. Two contents pages list Vocal Music and Instrumental Music. The latter listing includes works by Beethoven, Hayden, Mozart and others, printed in facsimile. The List of Embellishments calls for five plates, all present. Missing is a cover lithograph by W. Stone. The two most engaging lithographs are Athgarvan by James Duffield Harding and Venice by Moonlight by G. P. Reinagle. Musical facsimiles include First Sketches of the Opera of Oberon by Weber; Air by Mozart; Andante by Beethoven; Musical Puzzle by Haydn. The music sheets are generally clean and bright. An uncommon volume; unfortunately, covers and binding are badly distressed. Item #50910
