Ellis, Wm. (engraved by).
London. William Miller. Print dated 1804. Paper watermark 1815.
Aquatint engraving, handcolored, sheet size 14 x 10 inches. Light indentation at upper edge of sheet from vintage paperclip and two small (1/2 inch) squares of adhesive residue at upper corners on verso of sheet - neither affecting the image area in any way - overall very good, clean and bright condition. Wonderful tone and color to this image of two Croatian women, "the only uniformity is that of their apron, which is always long and oval, made of a stuff of different coloured stripes, and trimmed with deep red fringe", plate number 30 from "Picturesque representations of the dress and manners of the Austrians" by William Alexander. The sheet of descriptive text (reproduced in facsimile) gives information on the region and costume traditions (text in English). Item #50825
