"Old Colony" paper samples booklet.

"Old Colony" paper samples booklet.

Westfield, MA. Old Colony Envelope Company. No date. Ca. 1930s.
Small portfolio, 9 x 6 inches, containing samples for tissue-thin decorative paper used to line envelopes. The portfolio's 6 sample sheets represent two each of three different color combinations based on a similar design. The cover of the portfolio depicts, in stylized fashion, an envelope with raised flap; an area has been cut away to reveal the envelope's attractive paper lining--the top sheet of the samples portfolio. The distinctive deco-styled patterns suggest that the samples portfolio was crafted in the 1930s. A logo on the portfolio's cover depicts a lit torch with the phrase "Direct Mail Envelopes" inscribed on its base and above, in larger letters, the words "Old Colony." It seems likely that the manufacturer was the Old Colony Envelope Company of Westfield, Massachusetts. The code on the front of the portfolio indicates the V 298 series. There is light spotting to the cover; the interior samples are in very good condition and are beautifully printed. An uncommon and attractive ephemeral item relating to New England paper manufacturing. Item #50757
