Stipple engraving, handcolored, sheet size 14 x 10 inches. Very slight indentation at upper edge of sheet from vintage paperclip and two small (1/2 inch) squares of adhesive residue at upper corners on verso - neither affecting the image area in any way. Very good condition, clean and bright. An attractive print together with a separate sheet of descriptive text in both English and French. An exquisitely engraved and handcolored image, plate number 38 from Octavian Dalvimart's "The Costume of Turkey" which was first published in 1802. This engraving has an 1802 date in the publishing line beneath the image, but the plate is from a later edition, the selection of prints presently available having watermarks from 1818 to 1822. The descriptive text gives brief but pertinent information: "...every person, who can afford it, has his secretary and other domestics, that he might not be compelled to exert himself, it is not to be supposed, that the Grand Seignior himself should be dificient in these attendants..." etc. etc. A richly colored and detailed image from an important early study of Turkish costume and culture.
