An illustration of the orchid plant and stem with flowers from Joseph Paxton's "Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants." The botanical prints from this publication are distinguished by the particularly fine engraving and watercolor technique, which gives them the appearance of being watercolor paintings. The magazine was published between 1834 and 1849, providing information for British gardeners on newly introduced plants suitable for their gardens and greenhouses. Joseph Paxton, who began his career as a gardener, was knighted for his design of the Crystal Palace, the centrepiece of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Item #50162
