Complete (never bound) issue of Harper's Weekly newspaper for April 26, 1879, black and white wood engravings, 16 pp, 16 x ll inches. Owner's name in pencil above front page masthead. Wood engravings include a double-page center-fold illustrating the Dog Show at Gilmore's Garden with numerous breeds attractively depicted; also, a full-page Nast cartoon depicts a serpent labeled "Solid South" slithering from a hearth and a front page Nast cartoon depicting a former slave owner ("Solid South") turning his back on the black exodus. An illustrated Supplement focuses on "The Birthplace of Shakespeare," Stratford. Of particular interest is a cartoon (4.75 x 4.5 inches) stated to be from the Pekin Illustrated Weekly that depicts a bearded thug, gun in hand, having just shot the man whose feet appear in the cartoon's lower right corner. The cartoon is labeled "Melican Man Make Big Fun." Newspaper in very good condition. Item #50138
