21 lithographic plates, most with hand-color, one engraved folding map (14 x 15 1/2 inches), 536pp, index, 9 x 5 1/2 inches, cloth-covered boards (hardbound). Ex-library with stamps and ink markations to a few pages. Covers fair with soiling, majority of spine cloth missing; rear section of plates split from text block and coming loose, scattered light foxing, dampstain to lower right corner throughout volume. Contents include: "Description of a Gibbon", "Cicindelae of Massachusetts", "Chiastolite or Macle of Lancaster", "Observations on a Shell in the Cabinet of the Boston Society of Natural History, supposed to be identified with the Murex Aruanus of Linnaeus and the Fusus Proboscidiferus of Lamarck". Plates include a Gibbon skeleton, Galapagos tortoise, numerous shells and snails, etc. Folding map "Geology of Portland & Its Vicinity" showing locations of Granite, Slate, Limestone, etc, around Portland, Maine.
