[ Horse Racing of the Sioux ]. NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS.

[ Horse Racing of the Sioux ].

Bodmer, Karl (illus).
Philadelphia. Hubbard Brothers. [ 1891].
Engraving, sheet 6 x 9 1/4 inches. Overall light toning, very good condition. An engraving after the painting by Karl Bodmer depicting three Sioux Indians on horseback. First issued as an illustration to Maximilian Prince of Wied's "Travels in the Interior of North America" (published in London in 1839), this engraving is from an 1891 work "Catlin's Indians" - in spite of the fact that all the illustrations are after Bodmer rather than George Catlin. Both Bodmer and Catlin were renowned for paintings of North American Indians. At lower left is the attribution "Drawn by Ch. Bodmer" (Bodmer changed his first name to Charles after his return to Europe in 1839) and at lower right "Engraved by Rawdon, Wright & Hatch." Item #49006
