Johnston, A.K (mapmaker). W. & A.E. Johnston (engraved by).
No date. Ca. 1846.
Engraved map, outline color, 24 x 19 3/4 inches on sheet size 26 x 21 inches, centrefold as issued. A few light foxing spots, left end of centrefold is reinforced on the verso. Very good condition. A detailed and fascinating map of the North American continent, at a time when migration to the Western United States was about to accelerate. While this British map shows the western end of the border between the United States and Canada following the lower Columbia River as the British had hoped for, the map obviously post-dates the agreement between the U.S. and Britain on the 49th parallel as that boundary: a notation "Boundary of Oregon Settled June 16th 1846" appears in the blank area of ocean to the left. There was perhaps neither time nor inclination to totally re-engrave the map to show this new political reality, suggesting that the map was published in late 1846 or early 1847. Item #47977
