London. La Belle Assemblée. (La Belle Assemblee). 1828.
Etching / engraving with stipple engraving, handcolored, on sheet 8 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches. Very good, clean condition; even toning to paper. An exquisitely etched and handcolored fashion print from the Georgian period. By the late 1920s fashions, particularly in the hats and hair, had become increasingly elaborate and overwrought making a magnificent if not outlandish, display. This example of the latest mode was published in "La Belle Assemblée." Vyvyan Holland (Hand-Coloured Fashion Plates 1770-1899, Batsford, 1955) describes this magazine as "one of the most important magazines of its time, and which contains some of the most delicate fashion-plates of all time..." Particular attention is paid to the delicately stippled faces. Publisher’s line states "Published by G. B. Whittaker, for La Belle Assemblee No 42. New Series. June 1, 1828." Item #45204
