Stipple engraving printed in color with added hand color, plate 12 x 9 inches on sheet 16 x 10 inches. A few very faint foxing marks, scarcely noticeable. Very good condition. An exquisite botanical image by Pancrace Bessa, one of France's foremost botanical artists of the 19th century. This fine example of botanical art was published in "Traite des Arbres et Arbustes que l'on cultive en france en pleine terre. Seconde edition 'nouveau Duhamel' considerablement augmentee" (Dunthorne 243) which documented trees and shrubs cultivated in France. This is plate 2 from Volume 4. At the lower left it is noted that the image was drawn by Bessa after original sketches made in Egypt by the younger Redoute (Henri-Joseph Redoute). Item #44008
