Bed Chamber at Knowle, Kent.

Nash, Joseph (illus). Lithographed by C. Hullmandel.
London. T. Maclean. 1839-1849.
Lithograph, modern handcolor, 11 1/2 x 16 inches (30x41 cm) on sheet 13 3/4 x 20 inches. Very light spotting in the margins, adhesive residue from previous matting at the upper edge well outside image. Image in very good displayable condition. This is one of the beautifully drawn and lithographed images from Joseph Nash's "The Mansions of England in the Olden Time." Nash's views of early English homes touched a sentimental cord with Victorians and were extremely popular, a second, smaller edition being published in 1874. This lithograph is from the first, folio, edition. The extraordinarily fine quality lithography is the work of Charles Joseph Hullmandel, who was responible for introducing lithography into England. Joseph Nash rendered the architecture of the houses in great detail and further enhanced the depictions with portrayals of the inhabitants. This image shows a woman looking into a mirror while one dog lays on the large rug while another sleeps on a nearby chair. (Tooley: English Books with Coloured Plates #337). Item #43740
