Karasz, Ilonka (illus).
New York. Washington Square Book Shop. Copyright 1927.
Color pictographic / pictorial map, 27 1/2 x 36 inches, dissected into 8 sections with older linen backing. Considerable wear along the section edges with some paper loss; two small spots of paper loss at lower left edge. A truly extraordinary pictorial bird's eye view style street map of Paris by the multi-talented designer, artist and illustrator Ilonka Karasz. Born in Hungary she moved to New York in her late teens and produced covers for the New Yorker (including two wonderful maps!), book illustrations, paintings as well as working extensively in the design field. This map, richly printed with the streets in gilt, is a striking counterpoint to MacDonald Gill's groundbreaking "Wonderground Map of London" (1914). In contrast to that humorous view of that capital's life, this is a window onto a sophisticated city - finely rendered images of many buildings are identified in the lower border (including seven Book Shops and nine art Galleries as well as Theaters, Museums, Hotels, Restaurants, Shops, Monuments, Banks, Bars, and Churches.
