Engraving with mezzotint, printed in color with additional handcolor, image size 12 3/4 x 17 1/2 inches on sheet 16 1/2 x 20 inches, centrefold as issued. Fine condition, soft crease to mid right edge (as published). Three plants with sliced banana fruit, plate No. 227 from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann " Phytanthoza Iconographia ", printed on thick laid paper. Dunthorne (#327) notes that plates from this work represent "some of the earliest examples of color printing from a single plate", many of them printed by a combination of line engraving and mezzotint. The initial S at lower right indicates the artist engraver Abraham Seutter (ca. 1690-1747). Item #43565
