New York. Illustrated American Publishing Co., 1890.
Black and white full page and in-text illustrations, decorative endpapers, 640+256pp, 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, spine has been covered with brown cloth tape, cloth-covered boards (hardbound). Wear to cover extremities exposing tips of boards, front hinge broken, rear hinge split but still attached, paper loss to front endpapers, faint red pencil notation to front fly leaf. A flawed volume. MISSING ISSUES: August 9 and part of August 16, September 13, September 27 and pages 583, 584, 585, 586; beginning October 11 half a dozen pages have portions clipped, presumably for scrap book; otherwise interior in good clean condition with faint damp stain to lower right corner (mainly affecting first half only), small areas of paper loss to a few pages. There is a great deal of interest with regard to articles. A short list includes: Women of the American Bar; The Court of the Golden Dragon (the Forbidden City); Wellesley College; Germans in East Africa (Emin Pacha); Port of Spain and the Island of Trinidad; A Nation of Gamblers (extensive article on gaming: cards, lottery, track etc.); Geronimo and His Warriors in Captivity by Captain Walter Reed, USA; DRAMA: Dion Boucicualt (two separate articles: biography and life work); Francophile Interest: articles on French Novelists at Home; Drama and Opera in France; French Painters (three articles); SPORTS: articles on Lacrosse; Polo, "the Rich Man’s Game"; American Wheelmen’s Meet; Tennis Champions; plus many full page illustrations by Thomas Nast (including Chauncey Depew and the Prince of Wales). A most interesting reference to late nineteenth century American society. Item #42747
