Eleven fashion plates with hand-color, plate of European Oriole with handcolor, steel engravings and mezzotints, color decorative endpapers, all edges gilt, iv+418+iv+387pp, 10 x 6 1/2 inches, decorative cloth-covered boards with leather spine and corners, gilt lettered spine (hardbound). Cover worn, some light soiling, spine has repaired splits. Owner inscription on "Presented to" page, small area of dampstaining at top fore-edge just affecting first 3 sentimental engravings and the title page, scattered foxing (on the majority of plates not at all offensive), MISSING several of the engravings (of sentimental subjects), a few short edge tears, good tight condition. Sold with all faults. Contains "About Critics and Criticism" by Edgar Allan Poe, George R. Graham's eulogy "The Late Edgar Allan Poe"; plus engraving "Dance of the Mandan Indians" after Karl Bodmer (just a few scattered foxing spots, mostly in the margins), a hand-colored plate of an European Oriole, eleven hand-colored fashion plates, color vignette illustration of Lake Como, Italy. A fascinating view into the home of 1850 with fashion illustrations, poetry, literature, plus sheet music for various songs. Item #42597
