Volckamer, Johann Christoph.
Nuremberg. 1708- 1714.
Copper plate engraving, modern handcolor, 12 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches on sheet 13 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches. Uneven margin at left edge, very good condition. A beautiful engraving from Johann Christoph Volckamer's " Nurnbergische Hesperides ". These plates are modeled after those in Ferrari's 17th century Hesperides (the first publication devoted to citrus fruit) with an image of the fruit in the upper half of the picture, but are enhanced with charming perspective drawings of gardens and views, making them of particular interest to gardeners and garden historians. This plate shows a view of the town of Hummelstein, now an area of Nuremberg, beneath the pink title ribbon and picture of a lemon. At upper right: "Pag. 188 a." There is an informative discussion of this publication in 'An Oak Spring Pomona'. Dunthorne #323. Item #41327
