Veduta di porzione degli avanzi dell'Ambulacro del piano terra nel Colosseo.

Rossini, Luigi (illus).
Rome. 1821.
Copperplate engraving, 18 1/4 x 15 1/4 inches on sheet size 30 1/4 x 20 1/2. Light scattered foxing, mainly in outer margins, a few 1/4 inch tears to outer edges and chip to upper left corner of sheet (not affecting image), dampstain to upper left margin (outside plate area), pieces of adhesive tape along verso of right edge (not visible from front), soft undulations to paper. A very good impression. Ground level view of a portion of the remains of the Colosseum. This impressive engraving by Luigi Rossini (1790-1857) is from the Le Antichita Romane series, depicting the antiquities of Rome and environs. Carrying on the tradition of Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) and himself an architect, Rossini's prints celebrated the Classical Tradition and appealed to the well-to-do tourists on the Grand Tour and to architects and designers. The engravings powerfully evoke the glories of Ancient Rome, while also providing the modern viewer with glimpses of this magnificent city in the early 19th century. Item #41131
