Vol. XX. BOUND VOLUME for July to December 1881, 27 chromolithographic plates, black and white in-text illustrations, xii + 640pp, index, 12 x 9 1/2 inches, three quarters leather cloth covered boards (hardbound). Leather spine missing, front board detached, lightly soiled and rubbed, rear joint split but still attached. Text block clean and tight with sparse light foxing, color plates bright and in very good condition, with crease (as published?) and rough edge to one plate. A half year volume containing weekly issues of The Garden magazine from July 2 to December 31 at a moment in its publishing history when the chromolithographic prints were particularly attractive. Within this antique volume is a wealth of descriptive information to accompany gorgeous and vibrantly colored plates such as: Cattleya Mendelli Superbissima, Group of Spanish Iris, The True Pompone Lily, etc. It almost reads like a blog, so many different subjects are covered in short bursts eg. Fruit Growing in America, The Date Palms (under the larger subject of The Indoor Garden), the gardens of country houses and castles are commented on etc. Suitable for rebinding. Item #40918
